~/bin and $PATH trick was interesting discussion.  Also urlview.

By the way, if you download my debian-reference-common package, there is
a script called /usr/bin/debian-reference in it.  It uses script to
determine X or console, try guessing available browsers, use $BROWSER
environment too, and invoke sensible browser.

I know what I did was a hack based on newbiedoc which I am sure imitated
some other program.  If you make a better script, let us know.
