Yes, lilo does use the initrd.img. Also the packages are i386, I forgot
to tell you that. What else do you need to know?

I'm really sure. In fact I booted the machine froma knoppix cd and
mounted the FS as ext3 without a problem. It was correctly
auto-detected.

Unfortunately that's not the reason:

/dev/hda2       /               ext3    defaults,errors=remount-ro 0      1
