I had the same problem. My solution was to statically compile all drivers
related to my hard drive and partitions (that is, in my case, the ide
drivers and the ext3 drivers), so that I wouldn't need an initrd, and then
use the splash -s -blah blah. This way, the initrd only contains the image,
and no drivers.
