Not at all. If it is useful to Debian, and if the sponsee is good
and a candidate for a Debian Maintainer, then by all means, sponsor.
I get quite some satisfaction myself from seeing packages
of mine used in Ubuntu.

I disagree somewhat. We are forming more and more teams and thus depersonalise
ourselves, are endangering us to do so. In my pre-DD times I was always
contacting DDs directly who were packaging something similar, and they
were always helpful and sponsoring. This is the way it should be, I think.
I still think that we need a "Debian phone number". Because people expect
that and they may be uncertain about their request and yet don't know whom
to ask. But we should then use our distributed community to our advantage
and become as personal or as colleagueish as possible.
So, yes, Ubuntu developers should be granted some means to upload to Debian.
If there is some committee accepting such reverse synchronisation requests,
then this should find partners on the Debian side whenever possible, not
just sponsors. And the DM status should aimed at, thus that the Ubuntu person
feels to become a part of the distribution as quickly as possible.
