Didn't keep earlier postings, sorry therefore for replying to this section of the thread. Anyway:
I was just using mempeak (a nice command line utility that displays the processes using the most memory in an interval of a few seconds, from http://www.rninet.de/darkstar/mempeak.html) while setting up a fileserver on a 233 MMX machine with 48MB RAM:
dpkg was using up to 20,4 MB of RAM. No wonder the disk is trashing all the time on our toys of yesteryear...
apt-get used 18MB IIRC but I was watching some other process and then saw dpkg appear on top of the list.
