IIRC, the Sets of Real and Imaginary numbers are subsets of the Set of
Complex numbers.  Therefore:
    5 = 5 + 0i
the imaginary part being zero.  And there would be times when one would use
such an expansion, in proving theorems, you often go from a simple
representation to a more complex one, to abstract out a term.
