I use the following procmailrecipe to drop duplicate mail:

PROCMAILDIR=$HOME/.procmail

# Throw away duplicate mail
:0 Wh: $PROCMAILDIR/msgid.lock
| formail -D 8192 $PROCMAILDIR/msgid.cache

Of course I'm still paying for the bandwidth consumed, but that doesn't
bother me much.
