I'd tell you how to get past that, but I don't remember how I did!

In case you care, I'll dump the relevant history and maybe you can
figure it out:

When I was in middle school, I mentioned suicide to my counselor. I was
subsequently removed from school, and spent the next 2 or 3 years in
more or less complete isolation, with the Internet as pretty much my
only contact with the rest of human civilization.

After that, my mother pushed me along to getting a GED. In the process
of getting it, I needed to study for it, which I did at the aptly named
"Tutoring Company". My studies involved discussion with the tutors. In a
few weeks, I was striking up the occasional conversation with tutors and
other students. Since then, I haven't gone out much, but when I do, I
don't notice any social impediment, and I often strike up conversations
with people when not otherwise occupied.

I have no idea what happened during this time, but perhaps this will
help you. I hope it does!
