But even the suggested (and not yet existing) solution is very likely
not a long-term solution given Canonical switches to systemd[1]. It
might still work for Jessie, but I expect it to be abandoned later (and
do we really want to use it for Jessie in this case?).

I wouldn't expect someone else to take up maintaince either: this hasn't
happened for ConsoleKit after all. It is probably even less likely to
happen here as the suggested solution involves using parts of systemd
and people vehemently opposed to it are unlikely to work on it.
