Please note that upstart is not yet ported to !Linux systems, and has
never run on any (yet). It makes only light use of Linux kernel
features, but due to the CLA we would depend on Canonical or people
willing to sign it to port it to !Linux kernels, which is not really a
nice thing.
Also, Canonical as being Linux-only has less interest in !Linux ports.
OpenRC is already working on BSD (and maybe someone might make it read
systemd service files some time in the future - the syntax is
declarative, so alternative systemd implementations are theoretically
possible)[1]

[1]: I know that that stuff does not exist yet and should therefore
not be counted as an argument in favour/against anything. But it is an
interesting opportunity.
