Please don't dig old mails to justify your assertion. He was trying to be
polite (even if it was not obvious to you).

Ian might not have understood you correctly.

Ian, Dave was saying that having the defaults in gcc was good since it
also protected custom binaries compiled by users and not only binaries in
official Debian packages.

It's certainly an aspect that the technical committee ought to consider in
the balance.

I reassigned the bug to the technical committee so any mail sent to the bug
is also sent to the list of the technical committee. That's why Ian saw
your mail.
