Lots of packages, it is true.  I don't pretend it is a trivial

I don't know why you think it is unrealistic.  

The Gnome 1 packages in "testing" are right now, by definition,
releasable.  They are not undergoing much upstream revision, so the
maintenance burden ought to be low.  Some (e.g. me) have offered to
maintain them until the Gnome 2 packages are ready.

The Gnome 2 packages will be maintained in releasable state by their
wildly enthusiastic maintainers.

It is not a usual case, to be sure.  However, until Gnome 2 is 
completely acceptable, some *do* think it is desirable to have
both available.
