That may be the case, but not all *backends* can use qcow2 images. On
our public and private OpenStack clouds we only work with raw images.
We have to convert all qcow2 images.

Please ignore the fact that the tools mention they can accept qcow2.
These are merely examples of what could be passed in.

Guess what, we convert the amphora images to raw before we upload them
as well.

While Jeremy quite rightly points out there is the "tasks" API in
Glance, we don't use it. We've occasionally thought about it, but it
moves the problem elsewhere and causes other complexities.
