It's caused by installation of GRUB in chrooted environment on non-primary drive. EBS on which new AMI is created gets /dev/xvdg, and that's what GRUB puts into device map as it gets installed on this drive. It was one of the problems which was causing problems with HVM images on GRUB 1.99.
