I haven't actually tried it yet, but two observations:

 1. Debian, by default, only looks at ~/.Xresources, not ~/Xdefault,
    so put these line in ~/.Xresources.

 2. Don't forget to either "xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources" or restart X.  :-)
