Well, my first reaction would be for you to try booting the "compact"
kernel, either by typing "compact" at the boot prompt or by booting
from CD 3 (see <http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/#bootable>).

That's strange - if the above doesn't work for you, I don't know what
the problem could be. :-/
