testing isolinux boot

I'm testing the cdrom image from
http://people.debian.org/~hertzog/debian-cd/woody-isolinux.iso

Dell Dimension XPS R400, PII/400

boots to prompt fine.

recbf24 finds my disks, then can't find init. init= option to it is ignored.

rescue and rescvanl can't find my root disk.

"bf24 init=/bin/sh" boots, but seems even more confused than I think it
should be. Mount needs the "-t ext3" option to mount anything, and umount
fails. This is probably a case of my expectations being wrong, and I think
I could use this to rescue a broken system if needed.
