I've seen the exact same thing under plain Qemu: newcons in VGA mode seems very slow (but not as serious as you describe in Hyper-V). Hopefully it will improve... otherwise we may need to disable it by default for the jessie release. Fortunately there was code added already in 10-STABLE to make it very easy to do this at boot-time, potentially from a GRUB menu entry. Users of KMS-capable graphics cards most likely still need this feature.
