binutils bug, you can find this error message in the patch:

http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=12913

Maybe the patch for GNU/Hurd is enough, otherwise something very similar.

Btw could you please use the BTS? It's very easy to lose track of
things if they're not archived.
