I also found out yesterday that the ifconfig from net-tools version 6.1-6 is
broken on my machine. The last combination of packages to work for me is
net-tools 6.1-4 and freebsd-hackedutils 5.2.1-32. With the latest packages I
get this behaviour:

$ ifconfig -a
em0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
        ether 0:c:76:3f:d6:72
        media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX <full-duplex>)
        status: active
        ether 2:0:10:37:8d:ed
        ch 1 dma -1
lo0: flags=8008<LOOPBACK,MULTICAST> mtu 16384
$ ifconfig lo0
ifconfig: interface lo0 does not exist
