I agree with John about using one of the standard FreeBSD NetBSD and OpenBSD
but that aside I would recommend exporting your password database into
an LDAP database. You can find more info at :

I am not sure about the nss situation in the BSD varieties but that Debian
Linux can be easily configured to use LDAP for authentication and naming. I
would recommend taking a look at the DebianISP mailing list archives and
subscribing to that mailing list for exellent ISP related discussions.
