The best thing to do (when possible) is to smarten up the package's own build
scripts and/or makefiles to do the right thing for all cases, and get those
changes incorporated upstream.  Failing that, just include the necessary
changes in diff as part of the Debian source package.

Try to keep records of what changes were necessary in each package, so that
they can be incorporated into the official Debian packages.
