What was the error message ?
It would be useful to check grub-install logs in /var/log/syslog and
provide the partition layout.
KEY: there is something missing in the list
of media where grub wants to install.
a decent no-doubt hint which drive has
been used for system install.
How do you define the system drive when /boot, /, /home... are on
different drives ? Besides, it is not trivial to find out the underlying
drive (or there may not be a single one) with LVM or software RAID.
IIUC, grub-installer is supposed to select the drive which contains
/boot by default, but the logic is quite complicated and I am not sure
it is very reliable.

2 - GPU
The installer fetches missing firmware (i.e. not included in the
installation media) from additional USB media only when needed for
storage (RAID, SCSI...), network (ethernet, wi-fi) and USB controllers.
However it can also automatically install firmware packages which are
included in the installation media for other device classes (e.g. GPU).
