What was the error message ?
It would be useful to check grub-install logs in /var/log/syslog and provide the partition layout.

How do you define the system drive when /boot, /, /home... are on different drives ? Besides, it is not trivial to find out the underlying drive (or there may not be a single one) with LVM or software RAID. IIUC, grub-installer is supposed to select the drive which contains /boot by default, but the logic is quite complicated and I am not sure it is very reliable.

The installer fetches missing firmware (i.e. not included in the installation media) from additional USB media only when needed for storage (RAID, SCSI...), network (ethernet, wi-fi) and USB controllers. However it can also automatically install firmware packages which are included in the installation media for other device classes (e.g. GPU).
