Yes, turns out sed doesn't do \a, but it does work if \a in sed is
replaced by [[:cntrl:]].  Doesn't make the line any prettier.

Well the version I looked at didn't have it, so apparently it was slightly
more than 3 years old.  It is a recent addition.
