I think the /sys interface is preferred in general, but I doubt the
/proc one is going away and that's what e.g. flash-kernel et al all
look at (maybe they should eventually transition too). Not sure when
the /sys variant was added I suspect it is well before the threshold of
kernel versions we are interested in nowadays.
