Indeed, if you are planning to do the 1.0.2 upload in the upcoming weeks, I agree it makes the most sense to do only one pass through NEW.
 
So I'm wondering how urgent this is.  If I upload it to unstable
now it might make it to testing faster.  I have no idea how long
the transition is going to take once it's uploaded to unstable.

For me, it's important but not terribly urgent. Ubuntu has been carrying the diff for 2 years or more, I want Debian to also benefit from this work, but I already knew it was going to take time.
 
I guess I can figure out how to do this in experimental myself.

Definitely, but since I'm the interested party in this change, I'll send the equivalent patch if I find a bit of time to do it.
