That's a good point. At the moment, things won't work very well after
the installation is completed from USB, though - the "CD" won't look
like a CD any more. As you've noted. Maybe we need an extra option in
apt which will look for USB sticks and make them look like sources for
installing packages, or an extra lump of code in d-i to set up the USB
stick as a package source.

It shouldn't be *too* hard to pick up on things like this - when
plugged in to a desktop machine, I'm assuming the auto-mounting code
will end up mounting the USB stick already, and it's going to show up
as ISO9660 instead of vfat/ext4/etc. It's also going to have some
useful extra data on it that we can pick up on, e.g. the .disk
directory containing flag files.

Apt guys, how much effort would it be to add an extra package source
(derived from cdrom), called apt-usb or similar?
