This is a known fault in the Thinkpad 440/540 series, apparently affecting all Linux installations where Linux is booted in UEFI mode (and also Windows installations where the disk was moved from another machine): https://plus.google.com/+TheodoreTso/posts/Sx6VLADVW9L?cfem=1 I think the current theory is that this is a bug in the BIOS 'Rapid Restore' feature, and if that is disabled then this doesn't occur.
