Bug#739587: check-missing-firmware.sh searches at most two media devices

CCing to #663504 as I believe this is relevant.  My apologies if I did
something wrong wrt debbugs, as I haven't really used it before.


Issue
-----

I'm trying to install Debian 7.4 onto my laptop using the amd64 netinst
image (officially named "Debian GNU/Linux 7.4.0 "Wheezy" - Official
amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20140208-13:45" according to debian-installer).
I have written the netinst image to and am booting from a USB stick.

My laptop, a Lenovo ThinkPad X230, contains wifi hardware which the
iwlwifi driver requires non-free firmware in order to operate.  As such,
I've been trying to get debian-installer to load the non-free firmware
from a second USB drive.

However, debian-installer is unable to find my firmware, which is
located in the root of the filesystem on /dev/sdc1 during the
installation process.  I should mention that /dev/sdc1 is perfectly
possible to manually mount from vt2 or vt3.

I have attached a syslog file from a debian-installer session.  Points
of interest:

- line 968: debian-installer displays a prompt telling me it needs a
  particular firmware file, iwlwifi-6000-4.ucode

- line 969: I plug in the USB stick containing the firmware

- line 989: I respond to the prompt by selecting <Yes>

- line 1084: debian-installer displays the same prompt a second time
  (this will repeat ad infinitum as long as I continue to select <Yes>,
  but I cut off the syslog dump at this point)

I have identified what I believe to be the cause of this issue, and will
explain my findings below.


Cause
-----

check-missing-firmware.sh is supposed to check if any necessary firmware
is missing during the debian-installer setup process, and then attempt
to load it from user-provided removable media.

However, its implementation assumes that

1) if there are any loose firmware files on connected media, then they
   must all be in the first "removable media" device that is possible to
   mount;

2) if there are any firmware-containing .deb packages on connected
   media, then they must all be in the first "removable media" device
   that is both possible to mount and contains .deb files in promising
   directories.

(I will cite specific sections of code later in this report.)

For me, and likely for other users as well, these assumptions do not
hold.  My firmware is on /dev/sdc1, but the netinst image I'm booted
into resides in /dev/sdb1.  This partition is both (re)mountable and
passes the .deb file test, because it contains in /firmware a symlink
called firmware-linux-free_3.2_all.deb which is pointed at
"../pool/main/f/firmware-free/firmware-linux-free_3.2_all.deb".

It so happens that `list-devices` lists /dev/sdb1 before /dev/sdc1.
Thus, both times check-missing-firmware.sh calls mountmedia, it ends up
searching the netinst image at /dev/sdb1 for my firmware, and neglects
to search my other USB drive, /dev/sdc1 .  As the netinst image of
course does not have the non-free firmware on it, this fails.


Code excerpts
-------------

On line 259 of check-missing-firmware.sh we see that `mountmedia` is
called with the expected result that "the media device" mentioned in the
code comments will be mounted at /media upon successful return from
`mountmedia`.  Similarly, on line 267, `mountmedia driver` is called to
mount "the media device" at /media : ::

It is clear that only one device is searched within each of these
if-statements.  To find out what exactly the two devices will be, we can
look at the `mountmedia` utility.

At line 78 we see that even though $(devlist) returns a complete list of
possibly searchable media, nevertheless `mountmedia` will exit with a
successful exit code the first time that `try_mount` succeeds on one of
the media listed in $(devlist)::

Under precisely what circumstances the try_mount function succeeds is
dependent upon whether the `mountmedia` utility was called with the
argument "driver" or with no arguments, as seen in lines 4-8::

When $WANTDRIVER is set -- that is, when `mountmedia` has been called
with the argument "driver" -- checkcontents succeeds only if .deb,
.udeb, or .ude files are found to exist in the root of the filesystem or
in a firmware/ subdirectory thereof.  When $WANTDRIVER is not set,
checkcontents always succeeds.

And try_mount succeeds exactly when both the media is mountable and
checkcontents succeeds::

I hope the above information is sufficiently convincing :) I believe
that fixing this problem may solve some mysterious user-reported bugs
related to firmware sideloading in debian-installer, in particular
#663504.


Solutions
---------

Ideally, check-missing-firmware.sh should search *all* mountable
devices, not just the first one it is able to mount, or the first one it
is able to mount that has .deb files in it.

In my opinion, the best way to do this would be to cause `mountmedia` to
mount *all* the devices it can, at /media/<full path of block device>
instead of simply at /media , and then dump to its stdout a list of
mount points it has created.  Then the caller, in this case
check-missing-firmware.sh, could search all the found media and unmount
them all when it was done.  Also, the passing of the "driver" argument
would become unnecessary as `mountmedia` would only need to be called
once to get all possible mounts.

Of course, this option would break backwards compatibility with any
other software that used `mountmedia`, as its behavior would have
changed drastically.

However, it seems like a good way to separate concerns -- `mountmedia`
would mount media, and check-missing-firmware.sh would check for the
missing firmware in those mounted media.

I'm entirely unfamiliar with the debian-installer codebase, though, so
the best solution may well be something entirely different from what
I've proposed.
