The installer for Debian 6.0 'squeeze' does not include commands for
wireless networking configuration in the 'laptop' task. However, the
Network Manager GUI included in the 'desktop' task can be used to
configure wireless networking for a single-user system.

With a few exceptions, driver modules have a list of device IDs they
will work with and they are automatically loaded based on that. They
won't touch any device whose ID is not on the list, so loading 'by hand'
has no effect.

The version of ath9k in 'squeeze' doesn't support this particular
device, and looking at the upstream changes it's clear that some quite
large changes were needed to support it. I'm disappointed that we
haven't added support for many new wireless networking chips in point
releases (6.0.x), but since the release of 'wheezy' is now imminent
that's not going to change.

Right. I recommend that you install a later kernel version from the
squeeze-backports suite <http://wiki.debian.org/Backports>. Installing
the linux-image-amd64 package from there should give you essentially the
same kernel as will be in 'wheezy'.
