Comments/Problems:
The install completed just fine. On the reboot, gdm starts and displays the login screen.
After logging in, X flashes a number of partial images and finally displayed a grayish blue
screen with a small black rectangle centered need the top of the screen. The mouse works
(i.e., the cursor moves) but nothing else works. A ctl-alt-del causes the screen to flicker
for a minute or two before the system finally halts.
I rebooted the system into the recovery mode, logged in and configured X with the nouveau
driver. When X was started, after a minute or so X displayed a perfectly formed graphical
error page indicationg something went wrong and provided a button to stop the server. Upon
clicking the button X terminated successfully. The server log showed no errors.
I then rebooted the system and it behaved as it did upon the initial boot, but the small black
box was displayed as a small dark gray box centered near the bottom of the screen.
If the installer cannot configure the desktop correctly, my suggestion is for the installer to
install the desktop packages but not setup gdm as part of the system startup. Just clearly
instruct the user to configure the desktop after the basic install is complete and point the
user to the documentation for doing so.
This machine ran the previously version of Debian, with X and Gnome, with no problems.
At this point I do not have a usable desktop. I certainly can remove gdm from the startup and
use the system as a text-interface-only system (this is not my main machine).
Should I report the X problems to a Debian maintainer or Xorg?
