sorry, I cannot follow you here.

What *I* meant was: it is suggested to create some more partitions,
but this is *optional*. while having a root partition is *not* optional.

Ahh, wait: probably I have mixed up "root partition" and "root filesystem"?
The d-i manual chapter in question mentions "root partition", and I have
interpreted this as "the partition which holds the root-filesystem".
But probably the "root partition" is something different?
Maybe this should be made clearer in the manual?
