So... general comment that, at least in the stable version, the
installer really doesn't support a basic remote serial terminal all
that well.
It works just fine with HP iLO in ncurses mode and I'm pretty sure that
I completed an installation on a Supermicro IPMI. I think the latter
used console redirection, though, not true serial.
FYI: It is console redirection, but via the (virtual) serial port. The
newer SuperMicros support both KVM-over-IP (and provide an on-board web
server that supplies a Java KVM client), AND serial-over-IP. I've found
the KVM to be even flakier than the serial support. I've also got a
couple of older servers that don't support KVM.
In general, try to install from a linux box with a proper terminal. I've heared
that one can emulate virtual machines nowadays.
Another good idea - and I do have a couple of those sitting around
(though even the one under my desk runs headless - I'll have to
reallocate a display and keyboar :-).
