Once I actually used the correct image :-), I can confirm that it bring
up the Grub menu and launches the installer with useable graphics.

At least in my case, though, gfxmode=auto is fixed in Grub2 >= revision
4412.  Your change could probably be made temporary contingent on that,
so that nicer resolutions could be used in the future.
