It has rather made an impression of releasing the xfce-default-desktop-tasksel
version after a number of bugfix versions, hasn't it?

Having the GNOME 3 as Wheezy's default desktop (after Squeeze's GNOME 2)
is NOT a very obvious thing ;)

Yes, it's more like a sort of an official question to track easily
without subscribing to the mailing lists.

IMHO, we should get at least a comment from Joey Hess
as the author of the original Git commit:

Some links to the discussions regarding that commit & choosing the default desktop

Hmm, it seems not to be directly related to the current discussion;
do you mean it's a some kind of argument against the "GNOME 3 by default"?
