I figured why it hangs:

Last messages for normal users are: 
"Searching drives for an installer ISO Image"
"Mounting /dev/sda4..."

/dev/sda4 is an extended partition

I installed Debian in expert mode to avoid that.  In installed system 
(3.2.0-3-686-pae) "mount -t auto -o ro /dev/sda4 /mnt" also hangs.

Control-C, Control-Z, kill, kill -9 and 'shutdown -h now' have no effect.
Hardware reset is needed.

Same happens with smaller (160 GB) disk. So this is a kernel bug.

Perhaps 'file -s' could be used to test if there is a filesystem.
It did not hang on my system.
