I did a test installation (on VirtualBox) with exactly the same settings as
you did, and everything went fine!

The first of your problems (openoffice.org packages) was caused through a
"data error" while unpacking the *.deb file:

May 9 06:48:36 in-target: Unpacking openoffice.org-writer (from .../openoffice.org-writer_1%3a3.2.1-11+squeeze4_i386.deb) ...
May 9 06:48:42 in-target: dpkg-deb (subprocess): data: internal bzip2 read error: 'DATA_ERROR'
May 9 06:48:42 in-target: dpkg-deb: subprocess <decompress> returned error exit status 2
May 9 06:48:42 in-target: dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/openoffice.org-writer_1%3a3.2.1-11+squeeze4_i386.deb (--unpack):

Since this files were downloaded from the mirror, this is probably
some kind of network/downloading/mirror issue.
Try the same again, probably use another mirror (although the
ftp.us.debian.org is not an unreliable one).

grub/lilo errors: I have not exactly an idea what's causing this.
Maybe you could try another installation, but don't plug in your
USB stick / SD card and your MP3 player into the computer while
installing, as you did the last time!
I can't see anything in the logs regarding this, but we had reports
in the past, that grub had problems when removable discs were
connected (grub tried to install the MBR on the stick instead of
the built-in hard disc for example).

Please tell us, how it goes.

So long
Holger
