d-i doesn't have gawk either. I don't speak awk well enough to know if
busybox awk and mawk can run the code added in bug #659208. 

Looking at the lack of any explanation attached to #659208, 
I am very tempted to revert it. CCing Otavio since he seemed to find
some value in that bug that I don't see.

Also, why was #659208 not closed when it was applied? Why was its added
file not fixed to use the same indentation as the rest of os-prober?
This seems badly handled all around.
