I just retried, with the exact same grub configuration:

* non-gtk initrd.gz, non-gtk gnumach.gz: boot
* non-gtk initrd.gz,     gtk gnumach.gz: boot
*     gtk initrd.gz, non-gtk gnumach.gz: no boot
*     gtk initrd.gz,     gtk gnumach.gz: no boot

So the culprit might be the initrd.gz. I didn't succeed in unpacking them:
what is their format ?

Cheers, OdyX
