<Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
      and ideas you had during the initial install.>
start to boot and prints lots of messages on screen, but then stops
the last messages are
[0.000000] Booting Linux...
[0.000000] Built 1 zonelists in Zone order, mobility grouping on. Total pages: 130071
[0.000000] Kernel command line:
[0.000000] PID hash table entries: 4096 (order: 12, 32768 bytes)
[0.000000] clocksource: mult[300c5] shift[16]
[0.000000] clockevent: mult[553f7ced] shift[32]
[42.966816] Console: colour dummy device 80x25
[43.020133] console handover: boot [earlyprom0] -> real [tty0]
after this nothing seems to happen

I have previously been running Sarge and FreeBSD 8.1 so the hardware should be fine.
rescue mode has the same problem, expert mode has the same problem

The following image has a similar problem, the error message is a bit different, but stops when doing something with the console
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.7/sparc/iso-cd/debian-507-sparc-businesscard.iso
last line is:
[0.000000] console [tty0] enabled, bootconsole disabled
