Comments/Problems:

Upon rebooting the computer into the Debian DVD install disc and
arriving at the initial screen the red swirl was missing and in it's
place was simply a large field of white. Basically the screen was just
fine except for the missing swirl. I hit enter and proceeded to install
Debian 4.0 rev3. The install went perfectly and presented no problems.
I had been using a version of the debian-installer on another os before
called alternate-install so I felt right at home.
No problem here.

Rebooting into the GDM screen presented a very pleasing login screen. I
immediately noticed that my monitor was properly detected and this gave
quite a bit of confidence right off the bat with Debian. Logging in
presented no problems and the desktop was very pleasing to the eyes.
However I immediately noticed the network-manager applet had a red x or
something on it. The network-manager applet was telling me that I had
no network. This was not true as I had a fully working wired network.
During the install I had hit cancel during the DHCP configuration and
set my network up manually. I have a wired static network. Since the
network was working I just went ahead and ignored it for the moment.
Later on while I was poking around in gnome-system-monitor I noticed the
network-manager applet used 12 MB of memory. I was not pleased with the
memory usage so I immediately went to the session manager in
"Desktop>Preferences" and selected disable for the applet. Problem
solved and the applet wound up being removed at the same time from the
panel.

I went to synaptic to poke around and in the menu for the repositories I
noticed that only the DVD and security were enabled. This makes sense
to me for server setups, so I had no problem with it. I proceded to add
the regular Etch repository but it was labeled testing and it defaulted
to Sarge and Sarge was labled stable. This was confusing for a few
minutes untill I verified my disc. I think this might be somewhat
confusing for novice users and I would like to suggest that this be put
in the release-notes to give a heads up. Ultimately it does not
matter too much to me as I have found myself using aptitude anyway.

Moving on to check out the gnome-system-log. This presented itself with
being unable to see any logs. I fixed this by adding myself to the
appropiate group. This makes sense as a default. But I would say that
any competent administrator would be using a central installation server
along with preseeding to roll out the install in the network, so I
consider it highly likely that someone using the DVD-ROM is probably a
home user. So basicaly it would be nice if the debian-installer noticed
that the install was DVD based and that the user selected desktop in
tasksel and would automatically add the regular user to the appropriate
group for monitoring logs. Another way to do this would be for the
tasksel after the task selection screen to ask if the user would like to
be added to the proper group for monitoring logs. All in all just a
minor inconvenience.

Like I always do with any fresh install of any brand of OS, I proceeded
to http://www.grc.com and took the "ShieldsUP!" test. Of particular
concern was my router which I had selected my lan ip for DMZ because the
Linksys befsr41 router version I am using is broken in several ways such
that I am always stealthed no matter what and trace route is severly
broken. The only solution where I do not have problems with this router
is in DMZ to my lan ip. So anyway I am at the shields-up page and it
shows port 111 is open. Well I don't like that so I turned off the DMZ
for now. I don't know the reason for that port being open but I am sure
the developers had a good reason. Eventually I will get around to
asking on the Debian users mailing list if it's okay to have that port
open on the internet.

All in all I am pretty happy with Etch. I was using a Debian based
distro which had a 6 month release cycle and after a couple of years of
upgrading twice a year, I just got sick of it. Plus that distro was
fairly buggy. I am sooo ready for upgrade cycles of 1.5 to 2 years.
Using Debian stable will mean less antacid. I originally started with
Debian just a bit before Sarge was released and now I am back again. I
am already aware of Lenny coming down the line but I have made myself a
plan to always wait until the second or third rev of any stable release
before I upgrade.

Thank you Debian developers and volunteers for a great Etch release!

Package: libparted1.7-udeb
Status: install ok installed
Priority: extra
Section: debian-installer
Installed-Size: 340
Maintainer: Parted Maintainer Team <parted-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org>
Version: 1.7.1-5.1
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libuuid1-udeb
Provides: libparted1.7-1
Description: The GNU Parted disk partitioning shared library
GNU Parted is a program that allows you to create, destroy,
resize, move and copy hard disk partitions. This is useful
for creating space for new operating systems, reorganising
disk usage, and copying data to new hard disks. This package
contains the Parted binary and manual page.
 .
This package contains libparted, the required shared library
used by Parted. This is a cut-down package with no normal
documentation intended to be used in debian-installer.
 .
Parted currently supports DOS, Mac, Sun, BSD, GPT, MIPS and
PC98 disklabels/partition tables, as well as a 'loop' (raw
disk) type which allows use on RAID/LVM. Filesystems which
are currently fully supported are ext2, ext3, fat (FAT16
and FAT32), ReiserFS (with libreiserfs) and linux-swap.
Parted can also detect and remove HFS (Mac OS), JFS, NTFS,
UFS (Sun and HP), XFS and ASFS/AFFS/APFS (Amiga) filesystems,
but cannot create, resize or check these filesystems yet.
 .
Note that ReiserFS support is only enabled if you install
the libreiserfs0.3-0 package. Since libreiserfs0.3-0 has been
removed from sarge, ReiserFS support is not compiled in the
 default package.
 .
The nature of this software means that any bugs could cause
massive data loss. While there are no known bugs at the moment,
they could exist, so please back up all important files before
running it, and do so at your own risk.

GNU Parted is a program that allows you to create, destroy,
resize, move and copy hard disk partitions. This is useful
for creating space for new operating systems, reorganising
disk usage, and copying data to new hard disks. This package
contains the Parted binary and manual page.
 .
This package is similar to the "big" parted package, but has
less cosmetical features resulting in smaller binary. Intended
 to be used in debian-installer.

 .
The nature of this software means that any bugs could cause
massive data loss. While there are no known bugs at the moment,
they could exist, so please back up all important files before
running it, and do so at your own risk.
