start to boot and prints lots of messages on screen, but then stops
the last messages are

after this nothing seems to happen
 
I have previously been running Sarge and FreeBSD 8.1 so the hardware should be fine.
rescue mode has the same problem, expert mode has the same problem
 
The following image has a similar problem, the error message is a bit different, but stops when doing something with the console

Fixed in Debian 6.0.1 full images with linux-2.6_2.6.32-31.
