I wanted to keep the hardware as plain vanilla as possible. Comments/Problems: The boot parameter generic.all_generic_ide=1 used with the install command (which was accepted by the Etch install) was not recognized by Lenny -igonored. Using the same parameter with the expert command was recognized. The prior Etch install had no problems with my USB port while Lenny required an irqpoll parameter to boot (expert mode; I abandoned the install command after it wouldn't take the generic.all_generic_ide=1 option; that was originally used in Etch because its install did not recognize my plain vanilla IDE DVD reader which I had installed after Etch had problems with my sata DVD burner). I also used noapic nolapic and hwdetect/start_pcmicia=false boot parameters to be on the safe side. The boot loader installed according to the screen message but when I booted into the system it couldn't find the kernel. I used GRUB commands to locate the kernel and wrote the proper paths for it to boot properly, but I got a message saying that the kernel needed to be loaded before the system would boot. The problem apparently turned out to be in the manual partitioning. I originally set up the partitions as listed in the mount point table given, and first set up all the mount points /, /boot. /var, /home, /usr, /tmp, /opt, etc. and a swap space as the original partitioning. I set them up in the sequence given by the table with one exception - /boot was the first partition and / the second - everything else was in sequence. From GRUB I saw that when the partitions were written to disk and the files installed, boot, var, usr, tmp, etc. all were written to /. This seemed to indicate that the installation wrote files to partitions not dictated by the partition table. So I did finally get Lenny installed by setting up the following partitions in sequence: /, /boot, /home, and swap. In either case the bootable flag was set for the /boot partition. In the second case the system booted and I was able to install further packages. Since I have leaped six ranks up to Rank Amateur with Debian, it may have been me, but there seems to be a problem with the installer writing files to the wrong partitions.

Hi,

Thanks for your report.
Closing as it's an installation report from a debian installer version
which isn't supported anymore.
Feel free to test and report any issues against the current debian
installer release (Squeeze RC1) which supports more hardware and also
it's improved.
Thanks!
