Comments/Problems:

When I boot kernel ("linux") and initrd.gz from GRUB without any boot parameters, I get the usual text output after booting and then a blank screen. Switching to text console with Ctrl+Alt+F<x> is not possible, I must reboot.

When I give "vga=ask" as boot parameter, I can select a video mode. 800x600 works perfectly, I also tried 1280x1024 and 640x480 and these work, too.

I saved the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log and attach it to this bug report.

Thank you for your report...

This is why parameters are passed to the kernel in out boot images
(such as the netboot image for g-i, of the "Graphical install" menu
entry on businesscard or netinst images.

So, if you want to use the kernel and initrd manually from grub, then
you need to pass it with parameters too. I wouldn't call this a bug
per se.
