Comments/Problems:

Had consistent problems trying to install with 2.6 (install26).
I'll file that separately.

I booted with 'install24' and no other options.

There were some problems with network setup (see below) but I was able
to use the archive on the cdrom to get a bootable system.

In the "Select and Install Software" step, I set just picked
  [*] laptop
  [ ] standard system
but this turned out to be extremly minimal - no pciutils, lynx, rsync or 'file'.

I hit another problem when I tried to install the 2.6 kernel from the cdrom,
see below.

Thanks for the many improvements.

[bug]
unresolved symbol ALIGN in orinoco module of 2.4.27 installer kernel.

ethdetect was unable to load the orinoco_cs module, to get networking working.
I tried modprobing from the command line and got this:
   orinoco.o: unresolved symbol ALIGN

Going to the 'no network' option allowed me to proceed through the
 installation.

Post-installation, I was able to upgrade to a 2.6.16 kernel (from the cdrom)
and this did support my card. This is an old Netgear 802.11b-only card, it
should be supported in 2.4 kernels.

[bug?]
d-i mounts cdrom at a different place than normal system?

I'm not sure this is a bug or a feature or just me.

When I came to install a 2.6 kernel from the cdrom, I had difficulty getting
the cdrom mounted. I had completed the basic installation and had rebooted
  into a fully running system.
When mounting the installer disk under d-i, during installation, the
system uses /cdrom as the mount point.
When I tried to mount the cdrom, it seemed like the /cdrom location had
disappeared and I had to either mount it as /media/cdrom0 or create a
symlink /cdrom-> /dev/sr0 (can't recall which and my notes are incomplete).
It took a bit of fiddling with 'fdisk -l /dev/hdc' and so on to figure
out that I was trying to access the wrong device.

Does the installer to use a mountpoint for the cdrom that is consistent
with later usage, during normal system operation?
This is probably something that only affects 2.4 people with no network,
but I thought I should flag it.

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
