Hello

I got a 7 year old machine from my professor. Its a dual PIII 1Ghz
(Coppermine) with 512 MB Ram. Since its an old hardware, I planned to
use Debian Etch with Xfce window manager.

I downloaded the netinst package to install.

Now how much I try, Debian Etch does not recognises my Ethernet card. I
tried 4 different types with one being bought 2 days back by paying
25USD :( I tried 3Com (which uses generic 3c59x), Netgear, Linkcom,
D-Link (this one is the newest one that I bough).

But if I use Sarge, it detects all of them.

In etch, even if I do a manual modprobe with the module, then also it
nevergets detected. It does not come in lspci option also.

I used other distros e.g. knoppix, elive, red hat and all of them
recognises my card.

As a side note, even Ubuntu 6.06, 6.1, 7.04 didnt recognise my card. So
I think its broken in the latest Debian package list.

Thus to install Etch, I had to first install Sarge and then do the
upgrdation. Right now I am running from Etch and its working fine but if
I start the installation again, it does not recognises it.

I use this machine at home so I can help you in giving any info about
the system if you want.

Ritesh

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
  Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful

The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.

In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.

You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.

If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.

Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
