Method: Downloaded netinst ISO for "testing", burned to the CD, booted off
this CD, then did network install from ftp.cerias.purdue.edu.
No proxies. Internal LAN with DHCP, connected to the DSL line
with a static external IP.
Machine: self-assembled, based on Gateway2000's mini-ATX motherboard (i810E)
133 MHz system bus. Single IDE HDD as primary PCI master, single
IDE CD-ROM (HITACHI CDR-8130) as secondary IDE master.
Processor: PIII-933 MH
Memory: 2x128 PC-133 SDRAM
Root Device: 10 Gb ATA-66 IDE HDD, /dev/hda.

Comments/Problems: Once I booted off the netinst CD, the install
started as expected (expert26 mode). Hardware detection worked
fine and presented a list of kernel modules that needed to be
loaded. Being cautious, I accepted them all. After hitting "OK"
the installer cleared the screen and hanged (while attempting to
access the CD-ROM from time to time). On the message console the
words "Detecting installation CD-ROM" appeared... and stayed
forever. After some google searching (one of the posts that I
found even suggested replacing a CD-ROM as a working solution) I
found a post that indirectly mentioned PIIX module. So I restarted
the hung installation, got to module detections again and disabled
loading PIIX module. Magically, that did it. The CD-ROM detection
worked, and installation continued to network card detection.
Found both onboard e100 and additional AMD PCnet32 cards and
suggested to load three modules: e100, pcnet32 and piix (again).
I OK'ed loading all three modules - and everything happily ran
without any further glitch.

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful
The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.
In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.
You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.
If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.
