Comments/Problems:

I could not get the installer to find my cd/dvd-rw drive to mount it. It is connected to m/b via ide, hard disks and usb ports etc have SATA connections. The SATA devices showed up fine as /dev/sda, /dev/sdb etc. But there was no hda entry or anything corresponding to cd drives.

After help on #debian-boot this problem was solved in a fresh install by passing generic.all_generic_ide=1 to the installer at boot time.
