Ah, I got your idea (and also where it started going wrong)

I do understand your concurrent confusion
and I believe that http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.mips/apbs02.html
with text like 'Creating the preconfiguration file is covered later in
this appendix.' will enlighten you.
