Hmm. Did you check whether this offered to load ide-generic? It's quite
possible that it would not and it's now academic anyway, but I'm still
curious.

Great. I've modified the patch a bit so that ide-generic is only loaded if
an ISA bus has been detected. From the discussion on the kernel mailing
list [1] it seems that for your system the IDE controller may not actually
be on the ISA bus, but it seems a reasonable test anyway, at least to start
with.
I'll upload the new version of hw-detect some time today. Could you maybe
try a full installation using a daily image in a few days? That's mainly to
check that the ide-generic module is also loaded for the installed system.
